Shila Mehta

Smt. Shila Mehta, a renowned Kathak dancer and choreographer, is empanelled with “Indian Council of Cultural relations” [ICCR] and has performed in many major festivals of India and abroad. She regularly conducts workshops - lecture demonstration in and around India and abroad including at USA, UK, Middle East Countries, Germany, Ireland, Oman since last many years. In 2002, at the invitation of govt. of India, she had the honor of performing successfully at 17 cities of Germany under the series of “CULTURE ON WHEELS”.

She has the blessing of Gurus like Nrityacharya Shri Prahalad Das, Pt. Vijai Shankar, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, Shri Chitresh Das, Smt. Kumudini Lakhia, Smt. Kalanidhi Narayana in grooming her as a dancer and artist.

She has been recognised for her work in the field of dance on many occasions since last many years. Shila has to her credit the following recognitions:

“Nritya Praveen” Award

“Outstanding Group of Young Persons” Award in the category of Stage Performance.

In 2003, she was awarded “The Overseas Natya Award - 2003,” for outstanding contribution to dance in USA.

In 2004, “Nritya Sadhana Award” in Kolkata for her contributions to dance.

In 2005 “Senior Fellowship Award” from Department of Culture – Govt. of India.

She is the founder & Artistic Director of Nupur Zankar Academy of Performing Arts and Research Centre – Mumbai, where Kathak dance, Folk Dances, Vocal music, Instrumental music, Yoga are taught under the guidance of eminent Gurus.

She is adept at directing Dance Ballets and in presenting Folk Dances in both traditional and innovative styles. She has choreographed more than 200 compositions innovatively over last few years.

Her research project on “Charani Kathak” –A presentation of folk literature of Gujarat, through Kathak Dance is of a high remark.
