Under the aegis of the “SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV 2005” Intensive workshop was conducted by internationally renowned Kathak Guru Pt.Vijai Shankar from Kolkatta, from 7th to 16th jan. 2005.

“SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV” 2005

The "SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV 2005", the 5th in the series was organised by the NUPUR ZANKAR ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS AND RESEARCH CENTRE on the 26th January05.

It is towards the objective of keeping the Indian Art & Culture alive and its proliferation especially amongst the masses that has spurred Smt. Shila Mehta – Artistic Director of the academy to conceive the Mahotsav five years earlier. The Mahotsav is organized annually with the objective of creating an opportunity especially for the future generation and for the masses to get better exposure and understanding of our rich cultural heritage. It also aims to nurture and further develop the interest of the students and give them a platform to interact with the senior artists and Gurus and learn from them directly.

The "SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV" comprises.

1. An intensive workshop by renowned Gurus

2. Performances by eminent and renowned artists

3. Performances by students of the Academy

This year the workshop was conducted by internationally renowned Kathak Guru Pt. Vijai Shankar from Kolkata, one of the foremost disciples of Pt. Birju Maharaj from 7th to 16th January 2005.

The performances were held on 26th January 2005.The programme included Screening of Rare films and material on Kathak Dances by Padmashri Dr. Sunil Kothari and Kathak performances by Smt. Shila Mehta and her students.

The function was inaugurated by The Chief Guest Sri Ramesh Singh Thakur – Corporator and a Trustee of Thakur Educational Trust, Guest of Honour Pt.Nayan Ghosh –an eminent Sitarist and Tabla Player, and Smt. Ranjana Zaveri, the renowned exponent of Manipuri dance.

The Mahotsav opened with Audio Visual Show on “Kathak Dance in the early fifties” presented by Padmashri Dr. Sunil Kothari. Explanations by Dr Sunil Kothari enhanced the interest of the Audience from the angle of looking at Dance as an educational form.

The juxtaposition of the screening and the performance by Smt Shila Mehta and her students contextualized the historical development of Kathak.

• The rendition of Tal- Dhamar-14 beats by Smt Shila Mehta, who is trained under celebrated Gurus like Nrityacharya Sri Prahlad Das, Sri Chitresh Das, Pt. Vijai Shankar, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Talyogi Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, and other renowned choreographers held the audience spellbound. YOung & promising students of Shila Mehta- SRUTI MEHTA,REKHA TAWTE & VARDA PANDIT were appereciated for their graceful,& energetic rendering of compositions in TARANA in Rag Kalavati –Tal-TeenTAl-Drut Laya

Pt. Kalinath Misra accompanied her on Tabla, which added flavour to the show. Smt. Rekha Patvardhan who is also on the faculty of Academy gave Nagma support on Harmonium.

The Mahotsav was graced by the presence of many connoisseurs from the Dance, Theater and Music world.

The whole concept and performances of "SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV" were highly appreciated by the audience.

MARCH'04

A WORKSHOP - "CHAITANYA" [A Quest for fitness & relaxation] by Smt. Shila Mehta. It helped to learn and enjoy vital stretches and workouts based on Yoga blended with movements from Indian Dance that promoted suppleness and flexibility.

It consisted of Stretches and relaxation exercises to the accompaniment of melodious Indian classical music- especially composed for these movements.

JANUARY' 04

Lecture on Dance science & its application in South Asian Dance by Smt. Sujata Bannerjee (London) was held at Nupur Zankar Centre on 17th January04.The lecture was aimed to bring an understanding of a holistic training programme for dancers.

"SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV"-2003

The "SANSKRITI MAHOTSAV 2003" the 4th in the series was organised by the NUPUR ZANKAR ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS AND RESEARCH CENTER on the 13th and 14th of December. This year's Mahotsav also marked the inauguration of its new premises at the BMC Social Welfare Center at Kandivali (E). It is also this year that Nupur Zankar Academy of Performing Arts and Research Center has diversified its activities from teaching Classical Dance and Folk Dance to encompass the three elements of Performing Arts - Gaayan, Vaadyam & Nrityam (Vocal, Instrumental and Dance).

USA 2003 DANCE TOUR : JULY - SEPTEMBER '03

Shila Mehta returned from her Dance tour 2003 of the USA last week.

It was a great honour for her to be invited to conduct a Kathak Dance Workshop at The prestigious National Museum of Dance (the only Dance Museum in USA) Saratoga-New York to introduce Kathak Dance to Modern, Jazz & Ballet Dancers. This year The American Association of Indian Dance jointly with Aarti School of Indian dance, San Antonio, USA instituted an annual award and honour for an overseas artist who has contributed to the over all development and propagation of Indian classical performing arts and culture in North America The surprise announcement was made on the inaugural of the three days National Asian Indian Dance Convention 2003 held in San Antonio on 18, 19 and 20th July 2003 at the UTSA recital Hall of the University of Texas. She received the prestigious award from Smt. Chitra Visweswaran, while the selected invitees gathered in the hall. A beautifully designed crystal plaque reads : "Outstanding contributions to Indian Dance" Presented to SHILA MEHTA, 18th July 2003.San Antonio, Texas". The function was presided by Dr. Dan Gelo (Dean, College of Liberal and Fine Arts, UTSA) and chief guest Mrs. Gracieta Cigarroa (Chair person, Advisory Board, premature Infant follow up programs). Mementos were also presented to eminent artists like to V.P.Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan for their life time contribution to the Indian dance in the USA, M.V.Narasimhachari, Ratna Kumar, Revathi Satyu, Padmini Ravi in recognition of their services to the community.

There were three days seminars, lecture demonstrations, works shops and professional performances of top class dancers from different disciplines of Indian classical dances. She served there as faculty for KATHAK & FOLK DANCE.

Some of her other engagements in the US included:

- Performance for the AID- Austin (Association for India's Development organisation for the benefit of the Guria Sansthan, a non-profit organisation supporting underprivileged women musicians and dancers in India), in a form of collaborative choreography with Kathak and Bharatnatyam.

- Work with Glenda Brown Choreography Project held at Austin, Texas with the Modern, Jazz & Ballet Dancers, Choreographers & Musicians of Broadway Repute like Margo Sappington, Paul Hodgins, Lyn Wiltshire, Thom Cloverand & Bob Boross. She says that it was a wonderful experience to introduce them to Kathak Dance.

- Performance at the Arts Centre at New York.

- Conducted Kathak dance workshop for the renowned Emma Willards Dance Company of New York for dancers interested in exploring myriad styles of dancing.

- Her belief that Art along with all its values is essential to lead a quality life found fulfillment in the Dance workshop at Barsana Dham in Austin, which was attended by people from all walks of life.

23rd LECTURE - DEMONSTRATION SERIES in 11 Schools for IRCEN

In June 2003 Shila Mehta was invited by India International Rural Cultural Centre (IRCEN) for its 23rd annual series of Classical Dance and Music Recitals to present Kathak Dance in form of Lecture - Demonstrations to school children. She toured the hinterland of Maharashtra visiting 11 schools in an attempt to introduce to especially the rural and tribal children our rich cultural heritage.
